Immigration Conference in Sacramento

On February 8, I participated in a conference on “ The Impoverishing Effects of Federal Immigration Policy in California” held at the UC Sacramento Center, just blocks from the capitol. Before the conference, I ran into Administrative Law Judge Alberto Roldan ‘93 at a local cafe.

The conference was sponsored by the UC Davis Migration Research Cluster, Center for Poverty Research, and Institute for Social Sciences.  There were panels on education, economic impacts of immigration enforcement, the DACA (Deferred Action for Children Arrivals) program and psychological well-being, deportations during the Great Depression, and recent immigration policy proposals. I discussed the rise and fall of DACA and the possibilities for congressional action. Liliana Ferrer, Consul General of Mexico in Sacramento, offered a Mexican government perspective on possible changes to the U.S. immigration laws.

We had an audience of 50-60 students, community members, and state government officials. Dan Torres ’02 from Governor Brown’s office was in attendance.
