It was a busy day Tuesday at UC Davis School of Law.  The Career Services Office had King Hall alum Justice Craig Stowers of the Alaska Supreme Court talk about clerkships in the Alaska courts.  Formerly the Chief Justice, Justice Stowers has interviewed clerkship applicants at UC Davis for many years.  And we have had many clerks clerk in Alaska.  Justice Stowers talked about the special attraction of Alaska, with its great beauty and fascinating legal issues, with many cases of first impression for the courts in this young state.  I had the pleasure of introducing Justice Stowers and welcoming him back to UC Davis School of Law.

Down the hall at the same time, Professor Meera Deo was talking about her new book, Unequal Profession, which explores how the race and gender of a law teacher affects his or her experiences.  I stopped by the presentation, which was sponsored by the Aoki Center on Race and Nation Studies, and saw that Deo, a legendary teacher, had the attendees spellbound.

I also stopped by the California Environmental Law and Policy Center’s presentation by Martha Guzman Aceves, who was appointed commissioner at the California Public Utilities Commission by Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. in December 2016. She has focused on issues related to fuel switching, broadband access, water affordability, access to distributed solar and various other energy and telecommunications issues. It was wonderful to see Martha, who relayed to me the good news that, her husband, Fernando Aceves, had been appointed by Gov. Newsom to be chief counsel of the California State Lottery.

Our students certainly have many excellent speakers to hear from over lunch.
