AI and Intellectual Property

Seminar – 2 units. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way we create, share, and protect intellectual property (IP). From automated content generation to AI-assisted patent drafting, the lines between human and machine contributions to IP are blurring. Not only that, but companies taking advantage of advancements in AI are pushing the boundaries of the legal system by scraping the web for information that authors and musicians call their own. Through practical exercises including hands-on training, this course provides students a comprehensive look at the legal dilemmas at the heart of the AI revolution. Students will take a deep dive into the intersection of AI and IP, and addresses the legal, ethical, and strategic challenges facing creators, businesses, and attorneys working in this field. Looking at recent district court and appellate decisions, students will get a first-hand look at how the legal landscape is being shaped around these novel issues of law. Students will also work to draft their own briefs for a hypothetical client (either a business or creator) dealing with these issues in court. By the end, students will be equipped to analyze, advise, and act in high-stakes litigation centered on the nascent AI-centered issues facing clients relating to intellectual property rights.
