Family Protection and Legal Assistance Clinic Highlighted by SCBA

The most recent issue of Family Law Counselor, a publication of the Sacramento County Bar Association (SCBA), features the UC Davis Family Protection and Legal Assistance Clinic. The article highlights the ways in which the clinic provides an invaluable experiential learning experience for King Hall students.
Through experiential learning, students learn to not only think like a lawyer, but how to develop their professional skills and identity. Consistent with clinical pedagogy, law students enrolled in the Family Protection Clinic learn by doing. They work on restraining order cases from the initial client interview through resolution, including case preparation, discovery, client counseling, negotiation, safety planning, and trial advocacy during hearings. Although students are closely supervised throughout their representation, they take primary ownership and responsibility for each of their assigned cases.
