A Message About Our 2010 Commencement Venue

Posted By Kevin R. Johnson, Jul 23, 2009

We have some wonderful news to share with the King Hall community.  For the first time, the School of Law will host its commencement ceremony at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts!

The Class of 2010 Commencement Ceremony will be on Friday, May 14 at 4 p.m. at the Mondavi Center.  (Please note that the commencement will be on Friday afternoon rather than Saturday due to the constraints of the Center's schedule.)  We believe that the Mondavi Center will provide an especially elegant venue for faculty, staff, students, family, and friends to celebrate the achievements of our graduates; since opening in 2002, the Mondavi Center has a well-earned reputation as one of Northern California's premiere performance venues with superb acoustics, plush seating, and an appealing interior. In addition to providing an appropriately stylish setting for Commencement 2010, the Mondavi Center will also be the location of an indoor (and air conditioned) reception following the ceremony.

In making the decision to move Commencement, the Law School administration worked closely with Law Student Association President Victoria Hassid.  A poll of third year students overwhelmingly favored moving the ceremonies to the Mondavi Center.

Over the coming months, we will work to plan the details of rehearsals, catering, and ticketing.  Because of the size of the Mondavi Center, we out of an abundance of caution will need to issue tickets to each graduate.  However, if attendance is roughly the same as last year, we should have sufficient tickets to accommodate all guests.

We are pleased to honor the request of the Class of 2010 to hold Commencement at the Mondavi Center.  Based on our experience next May, we will decide whether to schedule future ceremonies there.

Thanks to Pamela Wu, Director of Marketing and Communications, and Gia Hellwig, Events Coordinator, as well as LSA President Victoria Hassid for their crucial roles in securing the Mondavi Center for Commencement 2010.
