Classnote submitted by Conrad Huygen on October 23, 2012

Lieutenant Colonel Conrad Huygen (J.D. ’97) is an Air Force chief senior defense counsel stationed at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. He is responsible for a team of 36 judge advocates and 26 paralegals who provide trial defense services in the eastern U.S., Europe, and Southwest Asia. His wife, Julie, is also an Air Force lieutenant colonel and is currently deployed to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan.

AMAL A. ABU-RAHMA still works with the California Department of Managed Health Care, where she has been promoted to Senior Counsel in the Office of Enforcement. She has been busy as Co-Chair of the Programs Committee of Women Lawyers of Sacramento, and was appointed to a two-year vacancy on the Bar Council of the Sacramento County Bar Association. She, along with her husband, and 4-year old son still reside in Sacramento, keeping active in her local and legal community.

DAVID A. BELL - "In my professional life, on January 1, 2006, I became a partner of Fenwick & West LLP, a leading firm that provides comprehensive legal services to technology and life sciences clients of national and international prominence."

DAN BIEDLER'S daughter, Jocelyn, turned two in time for Halloween. Wife, Gillian, now works as a Market Monitoring Analyst with the California Independent System Operator in Folsom. Dan completed five and a half years with the General Tax Law Bureau of the Franchise Tax Board Legal Department and will be moving to the Legal Affairs Bureau within FTB Legal in 2007.

MATT BRIGHAM and his wife just welcomed their third boy.

STEPHANIE HAMILTON BORCHERS accepted a position as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California, which she describes as a "very fun job;" started their youngest, Ben, in preschool; got new floors ("a remodeling nightmare"); got a taste of life as a single parent while Jake spent months at a time in Bakersfield living the joys of private practice; got to spend a lot of time with John Bezmalinovic ('99) and his wife who live a few blocks away and who "have the CUTEST little girl ever (besides my own of course). I am enjoying life as a soccer mom. I even drive a minivan! With remote control doors ... no joke."

97-1

JEREMY MILBRODT - "On November 4, 2006 I attended the wedding of ROBERT J. TAYLOR to his long-time girlfriend Stephanie Sultany. Robert's hair looked great and he sweated a lot less than was expected. No one else from the class of '97 attended so I cannot report on anyone else, but Robert continues to be a sole practitioner in Newbury Park, California, representing people who are willing to pay him. As a result, he is able to spend a lot of time with his two dogs."

LISA TAYLOR CARLOCK - "Happily living in Davis with Chad (96), and our kids, Patrick (6), and Paige (2). The kids are keeping me busy, along with my part-time job in Career Services at King Hall, where among other things, I coordinate the Alumni Coaching Program. So glad to see some class of '97 volunteers in the coaching program (thanks Amal, Amelia, Conrad, Marcie, Nu, Paula and Serena!), but I will lose the office pool if a few more of you don't sign up soon! Hope my fellow alums are doing well. I think of you often (it is hard not to when you work at the law school!)"

DAROLYN HAMADA - "My husband, Greg Irwin, and I had a baby girl on January 10, 2006, Cassidy Laine Irwin."

97-2

MAJ CONRAD HUYGEN recently returned from the Middle East after being deployed with the Air Force to the Combined Air Operations Center where he provided legal advice on the use of air power over Iraq and Afghanistan. "It's good to be home!"

ANNE and NEIL KATZ - "We celebrated the birth of our second child, Owen Alaric Katz, on August 29, 2006. His big brother Ethan is now 3 years old and just started preschool. I am currently taking some time off and really enjoying motherhood."

On October 14, 2006 ADAM KEATS '97 married Dr. Stephanie Cohen (MD Harvard '03) in Nashville, TN. In attendance at the wedding were TOM LAPERLE, Joel Stern '98, MARIEN SORENSEN, MONIQUE OLIVIER, JEREMY WARREN '95, KATHERINE KIMBALL WINDSOR ('96), and myself ( MARK WINDSOR). There was no bonfire, but like all Keats parties, it was epic.

MICHAEL KOPPLE is currently practicing as a criminal defense attorney/ civil trial attorney in Los Angeles. Prior to losing an Orange County Employment Discrimination case in October 2006, he had won his last twelve trials, including 7 six figure civil verdicts in a row and 5 criminal defense verdicts. He would be glad to hear from any members of his law school class. MICHAEL N. MILLS - "I served as President of the Sacramento Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. I also was selected to serve as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Sacramento County Bar Association for calendar year 2007. Finally, in September 2006, I was chosen to be the Practice Group Management Leader for the Energy, Mining and Land Use Practice Group at my law firm, Downey Brand LLP."

MEGAN WHYMAN OLESEK - My news is pretty old, but this one's important enough to include belatedly: my husband and I welcomed our first child, a son, Samuel Olesek, in 2005. I am still at the same firm, but the firm name has changed several times! Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich became DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary and finally became simply DLA Piper.

97-3
