Academic Senate recognizes Professor Simmons’ distinguished service

Professor Emeritus Daniel Simmons ’71 has won the 2018 Oliver Johnson Award for Distinguished Leadership in the Academic Senate. The award is given out every two years to a current or emeriti faculty member who has performed outstanding service to the Academic Senate.

Simmons’ “nearly 30 years of distinguished service and leadership to the Senate exemplifies the high standards of the Oliver Johnson Award,” Senate Academic Council Chair Shane N. White wrote in a letter to Simmons. “The Senate is indebted to you for your exceptional service at both the Davis Division and the system-wide level.”

Simmons was a two-time chair of the system-wide Academic Senate and also chaired its Davis Division twice.

Professor Emeritus Duncan Mellichamp of UC Santa Barbara also won the 2018 Oliver Johnson Award. The awards will be presented at the annual Senate Chair’s Dinner in July in Oakland.
