Professor Dodge Honored with 2018 Distinguished Teaching Award

Professor William S. Dodge is the recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Teaching Award, Dean Kevin R. Johnson has announced. The honor, which is made possible through the generosity of Bill and Sally Rutter, will be presented at the “Celebrating King Hall” event on March 8 at the UC Davis Mondavi Center. That evening, Gary Solis ’71, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the law of armed conflict, also will be honored with the King Hall Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Professor Dodge specializes in international law, international transactions, and international dispute resolution. Before joining the UC Davis faculty in 2015, he taught for 20 years at UC Hastings College of the Law, where he was the Honorable Roger J. Traynor Professor of Law. At UC Hastings, Professor Dodge served as Associate Dean for Research and won the Rutter Award for teaching excellence. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and earned his J.D. from Yale Law School. A member of the American Law Institute, he clerked for Judge William A. Norris of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and for Justice Harry A. Blackmun of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Also nominated for the Distinguished Teaching Award were Professors Jasmine Harris, Robert Hillman, David Horton, John Patrick Hunt, Irene Joe, Courtney Joslin, Darien Shanske, Aaron Tang, and Rose Cuison-Villazor. Dean Johnson said that special thanks were due to the selection committee: Kim Lucia ’09, Chair of UC Davis School of Law Alumni Board, Professor Elizabeth Joh, the 2017 Distinguished Teaching Award winner, and Kim Waldon ’18, Law Students Association president.
