Professor Shanske Cited on California Tax Bill by The Nation, Bloomberg BNA, Los Angeles Times, KQED

Professor Darien Shanske was cited or interviewed by media including The Nation, Bloomberg BNA, the Los Angeles Times, and KQED regarding a California senate bill that would reclassify state taxes as charitable contributions in order to preserve the state and local tax (SALT) deduction for taxpayers.

The SALT deduction was capped as part of the Republican-sponsored tax legislation signed into law by President Trump in December. The reduction amounts to a significant tax increase for many in California. Shanske and other tax law experts have argued that the state could respond by giving a credit against the state income tax for charitable donations, which are still fully deductible. California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León has introduced a bill that would do so.

Professor Shanske also co-authored an article for Slate on the various options states can pursue to preserve the SALT deduction.

Darien Shanske is a Professor of Law at UC Davis. His academic interests include taxation, particularly state and local taxation, local government law, public finance, and political theory, particularly jurisprudence.
