Professor Chander Comments for Bloomberg BNA on NAFTA and Digital Trade

Professor Anupam Chander commented for Bloomberg BNA on the potential for Canada, Mexico, and the United States to include digital trade provisions in the renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Professor Chander said that so far the discussions have not included protections of consumer privacy, which might represent a missed opportunity, since the three nations have similar viewpoints on the issue.

"The creation of a digital single market would be the primary goal of NAFTA negotiators,” Chander said. “A single market would allow streaming and video across borders, and deployment of internet-connected devices for all of North America rather than to each national market."

Professor Chander, Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Law at UC Davis School of Law, is a leading scholar of technology and law. He is the author of The Electronic Silk Road: How the Web Binds the World in Commerce, published in 2013 by Yale University Press.
