Professor Chander Comments for NBC News on Facebook and Political Advertising

Professor Anupam Chander commented for NBC News on the potential for stronger federal regulation of Facebook in the wake of revelations that the social media platform was used by the Russian government in its efforts to influence the 2016 elections. Bills have emerged in both the House and Senate that would attempt to bring greater transparency and disclosure to political advertising on Facebook.

“Everyone is trying to figure out how to move forward in the future to prevent social media from wrecking democracy and interfering with elections,” said Chander. “That seems to be the most urgent and, in some sense, doable of the proposals.”

Professor Chander, Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Law at UC Davis School of Law, is a leading scholar of technology and law. He is the author of The Electronic Silk Road: How the Web Binds the World in Commerce, published in 2013 by Yale University Press.
