Professor Joe Comments for KXTV on Trump and Terrorism Trial

Professor Irene Oritseweyinmi Joe commented for Sacramento television station KXTV (ABC-10) on how public comments by President Trump might impact the trial of terrorism suspect Sayfullo Saipov. Trump has called for the death penalty in the case.

"President Trump’s comments taint the process because the prosecutors may feel pressured to perform a certain way, the judge may feel pressured to perform a certain way, and the defense attorney would definitely argue that any push for the death penalty or eventual application of the death penalty violated the defendant’s rights to a fair and impartial jury (maybe even process) because the President of the United States has already put out there on a very wide scale what should happen," Joe stated.

Irene Oritseweyinmi Joe’s scholarship focuses on the ethics of criminal justice. She graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin, and earned her J.D. from Stanford Law School. She clerked for the Honorable Napoleon Jones of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.
