Monika Kalra Varma ’00 Appointed Executive Director of Bay Area Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights

Monika Kalra Varma ’00 has been appointed Executive Director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area. Varma, who has been invited to return to King Hall to deliver the Distinguished Public Interest Alumni Lecture in Spring 2018, will lead a team focused on securing equal justice for all, in particular emphasis on inequities confronting communities of color.

Varma most recently served as the Executive Director of the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, the largest provider of pro bono legal services in the District of Columbia. She also served as Director of the Center for Human Rights at the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights, where she worked to address complex human rights issues including untouchability in India, access to justice in Chad, and slave labor conditions faced by migrant farm workers in Florida.

The Lawyers’ Committee was founded in 1968 after the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, to enlist the private bar in the civil rights movement. The work to advance, protect and promote the legal rights of communities of color, immigrants, refugees, and low-income persons continues to be vital today.
