Professor Lee Presents Paper at the University of Copenhagen
Professor Peter Lee recently presented a paper at the Faculty of Law of the University of Copenhagen. Professor Lee’s paper is entitled “Innovation and the Firm: A New Synthesis,” and it explores the persistence of vertical integration in high-tech fields.
Contrary to prevailing accounts highlighting vertically disintegrated value chains featuring widespread patent licensing, Professor Lee’s paper argues that patent-intensive industries are characterized by vertical integration of upstream technology suppliers and downstream developers. The piece further notes that vertical integration can be an efficient and sometimes necessary mechanism for transferring technical knowledge, but it provides prescriptions for tempering its excesses.
Professor Lee's scholarly work addresses the intersection of science and society, particularly exploring the patent system's impact on scientific and technological progress.
