Luis Alejo ’01 Authors Resolution to Establish ‘Dreamers County’ in Monterey

Luis Alejo ’01, a Monterey County Supervisor, authored a resolution to make Monterey County the first “Dreamers County” in the nation. The resolution, which passed by unanimous vote of the Supervisors on September 12, came in the wake of President Trump’s announcement that he would phase out the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provided access to work permits and protection from deportation for qualifying undocumented immigrants—often called “Dreamers”—who were brought into the country as children. The resolution expresses support for Dreamers and urges Congress to swiftly approve legislation to help them. The Monterey County Supervisors also voted on September 12 to have the county join in a lawsuit filed by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra challenging the rescission of the DACA program.
