Professor Imwinkelried Quoted in Los Angeles Times on FBI Profiler
Professor Edward Imwinkelried commented for the Los Angeles Times on the methodology of Mark Safarik, an FBI profiler whose testimony helped secure a murder conviction that put an innocent man behind bars for 11 years.
Professor Imwinkelried said he finds nothing inherently wrong with Safarik’s method of drawing conclusions about motive from clues at the crime scene, but jurors shouldn’t give it the same weight as expert testimony that is supported by scientific tests, such as blood spatter.
“There’s an element of uncertainty,” Imwinkelried said.
Professor Imwinkelried is a world-renowned evidence expert who has published extensively in the field.
