Professor Cooper, Immigration Law Clinic Featured in Sacramento Bee
Professor Holly S. Cooper is the subject of a profile that appeared on front page of the July 31 Sacramento Bee. The story focuses on Cooper, a member of the King Hall Class of 1998, and her work with the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic, which she co-directs with Professor Amagda Pérez, to address the rising need for immigration law services that has arisen as the Trump administration has sought to increase deportations. Cooper, Pérez, and clinic students and alumni have conducted numerous “Know Your Rights” sessions and naturalization workshops, and worked to accommodate the increasing demand for deportation defense and asylum applications.
Also quoted in the article is Apurva Behal ’18, who talks about her experiences visiting immigration detention centers around the state, and Dean Kevin R. Johnson, who recalls the founding of the Immigration Law Clinic in 1980.
“We were doing immigration law before people realized it was a big civil rights issue, and have trained hundreds of immigration lawyers,” Johnson said.
