Dean Johnson Comments for NBC News on President Trump and Judge Curiel

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for NBC News on District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, whose impartiality was called into question last year by then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, who suggested that Curiel's "Mexican heritage” could influence his ruling in a fraud case involving Trump University. Recently, Judge Curiel was assigned a lawsuit brought by Juan Manuel Montes, a so-called “Dreamer” challenging his deportation to Mexico.

Dean Johnson said Trump’s comments would be unlikely to have any bearing on the Montes suit. Judge Curiel “handles many cases involving the United States government," Johnson said. “It is of interest because of the judge having been previously attacked — unfairly I think — by candidate Trump, but I don't think legally there's much of an issue here.”

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
