Professor Larson Quoted in Sacramento Bee Column

Professor Carlton Larson is quoted in the Sacramento Bee as part of an article by columnist Marcos Breton criticizing purveyors of “fake news” for manipulating readers with inaccurate stories designed to exploit feelings of patriotism.

Breton uses the example of how the UC Davis student senate’s decision to make it optional to display an American flag at meetings was portrayed on conservative websites as students banning the flag, apparently in order to provoke outrage.

The column quotes Larson to support the point that the student government was within rights in deciding to make the flag optional.  “The government, in this case a student government, is free to express certain viewpoints and not others,” Larson said.

Carlton Larson's research interests focus on constitutional law and legal history, with a strong emphasis on the 18th century.
