Professor Ventry Comments on IRS and Trump Supporter for Business Insider

Professor Dennis Ventry commented for Business Insider on the Internal Revenue Service and Renaissance Technologies, a hedge fund that allegedly owes $6.8 billion in unpaid taxes.  The company’s co-CEO, Robert Mercer, was among the most generous donors to the Trump campaign, leading to speculation as to whether the Trump administration would pursue payment.

Professor Ventry said that because the IRS Commissioner serves at the pleasure of the president and can be removed at any time without cause, Trump could have an influence in the outcome.  “Trump could direct the IRS to stop auditing or investigating or prosecuting a taxpayer,” he said.

Professor Ventry is an expert in tax policy and legal ethics. His research interests include tax expenditure analysis, family taxation, professional responsibility and standards of care, tax filing and administration, tax compliance, public finance, and tax and legal history. In addition, he is Vice Chairman of the IRS Advisory Council, and co-author on the casebook, Federal Income Taxation with Martin McMahon, Jr., Daniel L. Simmons, and Bradley T. Borden.
