Holly Cooper Comments on the Deportation Process for Sacramento Bee

Holly S. Cooper '98, Co-director of the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic, commented for the Sacramento Bee on the impacts of the Trump administration’s increased immigration enforcement efforts on local immigrant communities.

Misunderstandings about the nature of the deportation process are fueling anxieties, Cooper said. “There’s a misconception that if immigration (enforcement) picks you up that they’ll take you back within a week. That’s not how it works,” she said. “You have a right to a defense, a right to a lawyer and the majority win their cases.”

Holly Cooper is a Lecturer and serves as staff attorney at the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic. Her areas of specialty include immigration law and detained immigrants' rights.
