Dean Johnson Comments on Sanctuary Cities for Monterey Herald

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for the Monterey Herald on the City of Monterey’s vote to reject becoming a “sanctuary city” that declines to cooperate with federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws.  He said that President Trump’s threats to cut off federal funding for sanctuary cities were having an impact.

“Rather than simply symbolic, the Trump administration’s threats are discouraging anything that might be interpreted as offering ‘sanctuary’ to immigrants,” said Dean Johnson.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
