Dean Johnson Comments on Trump Immigration Order for Vice

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Vice on President Trump’s executive order restricting entry into the United States by individuals from seven Muslim-majority nations. Dean Johnson said that in the past, exclusionary policies barring certain groups of immigrants have led to discrimination against those groups within the U.S.

"When the government is saying we have to get rid of these—whatever group you want to say—it is an important signal to people in those groups [in the U.S.] what their worth is and how much they're desired," he said. In the wake of the Chinese Exclusion Act, "There was rampant discrimination in employment and discrimination against Chinese businesses and none of it went checked by government," Johnson said.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
