Dean Johnson Comments on Trump Immigration Order for Orange County Register

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for the Orange County Register on comparisons between President Trump’s recent executive order restricting entry into the United States by individuals from seven Muslim-majority nations and President Obama’s executive orders on immigration.  President Trump has said his order is similar to a 2011 order by Obama, prompting Dean Johnson to disagree.

“I don’t think it’s a valid comparison,” said Johnson. “I’m not familiar with, in recent years at least, any kind of ban on immigration from a select number of countries. It’s also quite extraordinary to have a suspension of refugees for four months.”

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
