Holly S. Cooper ’98 Quoted on Immigration in Sacramento Bee
Holly S. Cooper ’98, co-director of the Immigration Law Clinic at the UC Davis School of Law, is quoted in a Sacramento Bee article on the ways in which local authorities in California may resist cooperation with Trump administration plans to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. Also quoted in the article is Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg ’84.
Cooper said county sheriffs don’t report undocumented immigrants to federal authorities because they view immigration enforcement as a “federal responsibility” they aren’t willing to spend an “enormous amount of resources” to address.
“It (also) creates a lot of mistrust with the community,” Cooper said. “Most sheriffs have a belief that it can impact investigations if you lose community trust.”
