Dean Johnson Publishes Op-ed on Trump and Immigration in Sacramento Bee

Dean Kevin R. Johnson published an op-ed in the November 27 Sacramento Bee on president-elect Donald Trump’s promises to deport millions of undocumented immigrants currently in the United States. Dean Johnson also participated in a Q&A session that was published in the Bee on November 25 concerning the projected impacts of the Trump administration’s immigration policies .

“There are a number of ways that a Trump administration might seek to accomplish mass removals, but they are fraught with legal obstacles and potential public backlash,” Dean Johnson writes in the op-ed. The article reviews the possibilities for mass deportations, workplace raids, aggressive detention policies, and other means of achieving the goals Trump has promised, pointing out significant legal and logistical problems associated with each.

In the Q&A session, Dean Johnson talked about how he expected Trump’s plans to play out. Going after students in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would be “a disaster for any administration,” he said. Dean Johnson also said he thought it was unlikely the Trump administration would engage cities in mass roundups and deportations.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
