Holly S. Cooper ’98 Comments for Wall Street Journal on Syrian Refugee Crisis

Holly S. Cooper ’98, Co-director of the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic, commented for a Wall Street Journal report on how international lawyers are helping Syrian refugees stranded in Greece.  Cooper has volunteered to help refugees on the Greek island of Samos.

Roughly 10,000 refugees have escaped Syria to Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, where many are held in squalid camps.  The Greek government is currently screening the refugees to see if they must be returned to Turkey, and many of the refugees are arguing that Turkey is not a safe country for them.  Cooper and other attorneys have travelled to Greece to help with asylum cases and other legal problems.

Cooper comments in the article about meeting refugees inside the shipping containers where they are housed, stating that “it was really eye-opening to see migration that is very different from ours.”
