Professor Bennoune to Visit Serbia, Kosovo on UN Mission

Professor Karima Bennoune will visit Serbia and Kosovo from October 3-14 in her role as United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights to assess efforts to implement the right of all persons to participate in cultural life and to access and enjoy cultural heritage. The United Nations issued an announcement of her mission on September 29.

 “I am looking forward to learning how Serbia and Kosovo understand the realization of cultural rights and endeavor to implement them through policies, especially in the areas of access to and enjoyment of cultural heritage,” said Bennoune.

Bennoune will meet with government authorities and a wide range of stakeholders, and will issue a report to the United Nations following her visit.

Karima Bennoune is an author, lecturer, teacher, and international law scholar. In October 2015, she was appointed UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights.  She was recently presented with the 2016 Rights and Leaderhip Award by IANGEL, the International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law.
