Professor Chin Comments on California Proposition for PolitiFact

Professor Gabriel “Jack” Chin commented for PolitiFact, the political fact-checking website sponsored by the Tampa Bay Times, on claims made by opponents of Proposition 57, the California initiative that would reduce prison overcrowding by providing for the early release of some nonviolent offenders. Some opponents of the measure have stated that, if it were to pass, the early release of sexual offenders would become routine.

Chin said that although there are valid questions about who would be eligible for parole under the initiative, it is unlikely sex offenders would get early release. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation recently created a process to allow some second-strike offenders to be considered for early parole, but excluded those who must register as sex offenders, Chin said.

Gabriel "Jack" Chin is Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Law and holder of the Edward L. Barrett Endowed Chair at UC Davis School of Law. He is a prolific and much-cited criminal and immigration law scholar whose work has addressed many of the most pressing social issues of our time.
