King Hall Moot Court Honors Board Hosts 9th Annual Asylum & Refugee Law National Competition

On March 12-13, the Moot Court Honors Board at UC Davis School of Law hosted the 9th annual UC Davis Asylum & Refugee Law National Moot Court Competition, the only competition in the nation devoted exclusively to the topic of asylum and refugee law, and the premier immigration law moot court competition on the West Coast. This year's competition was the largest ever, with 23 teams from around the country participating.

Asylum Competition Chair Steven Vong '16 and Asylum Vice Chair Anita Barooni '16 coordinated over 60 competitors and 40 judges in moot court rounds involving a hypothetical appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Competitors also briefed the case. Jessica Malekos Smith '16 developed the problem.

Judges included Dean Kevin R. Johnson, Judge Joren Lyons of San Francisco Immigration Court, Santa Clara Law Professor Evangeline Abriel, McGeorge School of Law Professor Edward Telfeyan, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Audrey Hemesath.

In addition to Dean Johnson, the Moot Court Honors Board thanked the UC Davis Law faculty who were involved, including Professors Gabriel "Jack" Chin, Brian Soucek, Rose Cuison Villazor, Lawrence Green, Clay Tanaka, and Barbara Miltner. Board members also expressed thanks to Director of Academic Success Chris Ide-Don, the alumni who helped judge rounds, and the bailiffs who are members of the Appellate Advocacy class.
