Joan Watt '80 Argues before U.S. Supreme Court

Joan Watt '80 appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court on February 22, presenting oral argument in Utah v. Strieff.  The case concerns whether evidence seized incident to a lawful arrest on an outstanding warrant should be suppressed because the warrant was discovered during an investigatory stop later found to be unlawful. Watt is mentioned in some media accounts of the arguments, including an article in Slate.

Watt is Assistant Director/Chief of the Appellate Division for Salt Lake Legal Defender Association, which represents indigent, court-appointed criminal defendants charged with state crimes in Salt Lake County. She supervises the organization's appellate attorneys and clerks and also carries an appellate caseload.
