Professor Afsharipour Interviewed on Corporate Governance by Business Standard, Times of India

Professor Afra Afsharipour was interviewed on issues of corporate governance in India by the Business Standard and Times of India.  The interviews took place while Professor Afsharipour was in India to participate in events associated with the publication of the Handbook on Corporate Governance in India: Legal Standards and Board Practices, which she authored at the request of The Conference Board, a global, independent business membership and research association working in the public interest.

In an interview with Business Standard, Professor Afsharipour described the Handbook and the role it can play in helping companies comply with new corporate regulations in India.  The book provides a historical context for corporate governance reforms in India as well as an overview of different aspects of the latest company law and its impact on compliance and governance standards and practices. "The idea is to make this the basis for India-specific data gathering and research that could be useful to corporate directors," Afsharipour said.

In speaking with the Times of India, Professor Afsharipour talked about a new provision in India's company law that requires listed Indian companies to have at least one woman on their board of directors. Professor Afsharipour said that while most of the compliant companies in India have only one woman on their boards, and she is usually not an independent director, the "the salutary clause in the law will help change things ... will make women ‘board ready,'".

Professor Afsharipour's areas of research include comparative corporate law and governance, mergers and acquisitions, and transactional law.  Her scholarship has appeared in numerous law reviews, including the Columbia Law Review, the Minnesota Law Review, the National Law School of India Review, the Vanderbilt Law Review, and the UC Davis Law Review
