Dean Johnson Comments on Immigration Ruling for Southern California Public Radio

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Southern California Public Radio station KPCC on a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to uphold the federal court injunction blocking implementation of President Obama's executive orders that would defer the deportations of some undocumented immigrants and grant them work permits.

Dean Johnson outlined the history of the case, which stems from lawsuits filed by Texas and 25 other states alleging Obama's executive orders to be unconstitutional. Although the Fifth Circuit decision delays implementation of the orders, it does not resolve the legal conflict, which appears headed for the U.S. Supreme Court, Dean Johnson said.

The legal battle is likely to continue for another year, by which time the 2016 presidential campaign will be in full swing, with the likely result that immigration will become "a very pressing election year issue," said Johnson.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
