Professor Ventry Cited in New York Times

Research by Professor Dennis Ventry is cited in a New York Times piece on recent improvements in the housing market.

The author, Yale economist Robert Schiller, refers to Ventry's "The Accidental Deduction: A History and Critique of the Tax Subsidy for Mortgage Interest" in noting that Congress did not include a deduction for personal and business interest in the original federal income tax law as a way to promote homeownership. Rather, national politicians were thinking of farmers and the country's still-dominant agrarian society rather than persons looking to acquire a home through mortgage financing.

Professor Ventry is an expert in tax policy and legal ethics. His research interests include tax expenditure analysis, family taxation, professional responsibility and standards of care, tax filing and administration, tax compliance, public finance, and tax and legal history. In addition, he was recently added as a co-author on the casebook, Federal Income Taxation with Paul McDaniel, Martin McMahon, Jr., and Daniel L. Simmons.
