Dean Johnson Comments for PolitiFact on Rick Santorum’s Statement on Immigrant Children

Dean Kevin R. Johnson served as an expert source for PolitiFact.com, the political fact-checking website sponsored by the Tampa Bay Times and Congressional Quarterly. In an article concerning former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum's statement that immigrant minors from Central American are fleeing to the United States "because we have a president who said, ‘Hey, if you come, you're going to be able to stay, because we're not going to enforce the law.'"

Dean Johnson tells PolitiFact that deportation statistics don't support the argument that lax enforcement has contributed to the influx of Central American immigrant minors. "[It] seems far-fetched," Johnson said.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
