Dean Johnson Comments on Immigrant Drivers' Licenses for Southern California Public Radio

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Southern California Public Radio station KPCC on California's efforts to issue drivers' licenses to undocumented immigrants.  The state's license design has been criticized by the Department of Homeland Security as looking too much like citizens' licenses, but California has stood firm in seeking approval of the design.

Dean Johnson said that he did not foresee repercussions for California if state officials went ahead and issued the original design and doubted that DHS would take any legal action against the state.

"This is not a battle that I think (the Obama) administration wants to engage in at this point in time when they're trying to get an immigration proposal through Congress," Johnson said.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
