King Hall Team Wins Regional National Appellate Advocacy Competition, Advances to National Championships

The UC Davis Moot Court Board sent two student teams to represent King Hall February 22-23 at the San Francisco Regional Round of the National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC). Both teams performed well, and the team of Alex Hirsch '14, Nikki Agravante '14, and Berit Elam '15 emerged as champions of the Regional Competition, winning the right to compete in NAAC National Championship in Chicago next month.

Organized by the American Bar Association, NAAC is the largest moot court competition in the country. The San Francisco Regional Round consisted of 32 teams and took place at the United States District Courthouse for the Northern District of California.

One King Hall team was comprised of students Ananth Srinivasan '14, Tiffany Gilliam '14, and Jessica Hiller '15, and was coached by Jeffrey R.A. Edwards '09, an attorney with Mastagni, Holstedt, Amick, Miller & Johnsen in Sacramento. This team defeated several teams to advance to Round Four of the Regional Competition, coming out victorious against teams from the law schools of University of Pacific McGeorge in Round One and the University of Notre Dame in Round Two. They lost narrowly to Nova Law in Round Three, but advanced to the semifinals as the eighth-seeded team. In Round Four, this team faced the University of Seattle and lost on a tiebreaker by a slim seven points.

The team of Hirsch, Agravante, and Elam, was coached by Sarah Gosling, a UC Hastings graduate and attorney with Schuering, Zimmerman & Doyle in Sacramento. This team won matches against UCLA and Drake Law School in Rounds One and Two. They lost narrowly to UC Berkeley in Round Three, but advanced to the semifinals as the 14th seeded team. In Round Four, this team faced the same UC Berkeley team and won handily with a 54-point margin. Advancing to the final Round Five, this team defeated the University of San Francisco and was selected as the winning team by all six judges. They move on to compete against other Regional Champions in the NAAC National Championship, held in Chicago from April 10-12.
