Dean Johnson Quoted on Immigration and Voting Rights by PolitiFact

Dean Kevin R. Johnson is among the experts quoted by PolitiFact in debunking a statement by Congresswoman Michele Bachman regarding immigrants and voting rights.  The Minnesota Republican said in a recent interview that if the House approved the immigration reform bill recently passed by the Senate, President Obama could use an executive order to allow undocumented immigrants to vote in the next election.

In reality, it would not be possible for Obama to use an executive order to bypass the various requirements immigrants must satisfy in order to be eligible to vote, Dean Johnson explained.  To do so "would violate the intent of, as well as the text of, the law passed by Congress," he said.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
