Dean Johnson Quoted in Fronteras on Immigration Ruling

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Fronteras on U.S. District Judge Murray Snow's recent ruling that found the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office discriminated against Latinos by engaging in racial profiling in enforcement operations targeting illegal immigration. As a result of a lawsuit alleging racial profiling and discrimination, the court has required that the Sheriff's Office change its training and practices related to immigration enforcement.

Dean Johnson said the ruling puts "in jeopardy" the practice by local or state police of making immigration related arrests or detentions. The key question moving forward will be whether the settlement "will have enough teeth to enforce the letter of the law."

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
