Dean Johnson Comments on Undocumented College Students for Campus Progress

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Campus Progress on the efforts of some states to ban undocumented students from state universities.  The article details the experience of one undocumented student who organized protests against the Georgia Board of Regents, which barred undocumented residents from the state's top five universities.

"It's a troubling development because these youths came here as children," Dean Johnson said. "We provided them with a K-12 education, and we invested in them, and then we're cutting them off from any further investment and any further benefit they can provide for the American economy. It's short-sighted to deny students who have staked a claim here, and can contribute here, access on the same terms as other residents to public universities."

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
