Justice Kathleen Butz '81 to Receive Frances Newell Carr Achievement Award

Women Lawyers of Sacramento has named Kathleen Butz '81, Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Third District, as the 2012 Frances Newell Carr Achievement Award recipient.  The award celebrates professional achievement, commitment to furthering legal opportunities for women in the law, and contribution to the lives of women in the Sacramento-area community.

"Justice Butz is committed to mentoring and guiding young legal professionals," states the Women Lawyers of Sacramento announcement of the award.  "She generously gives of her time to young lawyers seeking career advice and provides direction regarding the skills necessary to become an outstanding attorney as well as to become a viable candidate for appointment for judicial positions.   Justice Butz has been a trail blazer and role model.  By her example, and her mentoring, she has demonstrated that women can succeed at the highest levels in law firms and on the bench."

Justice Butz earned her undergraduate from UC Davis in 1972 and worked for several years in the School of Engineering and Shields Library before attending King Hall, where she earned her J.D. in 1981. She worked in private practice in Nevada City, California, from 1982 until 1996, when she was elected to the Nevada County Superior Court. In October 2003, she was elevated by Governor Gray Davis to Associate Justice in the Court of Appeal. She is a close friend of UC Davis School of Law and a frequent visitor to King Hall, where she often volunteers as a speaker.
