Entertainment & Sports Law Society Hosts Ives Basketball Tournament

Dr. Ives Basketball TournamentBoutin & Briscoe won a thrilling final game over the Kings to emerge as champions in the 34th Annual Dr. Ives 5-on-5 basketball tournament, held March 11 in the UC Davis Activities & Recreation Center.  More than 100 students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends of UC Davis School of Law turned out for the event, which was hosted by the Entertainment & Sports Law Society.

The morning began with 12 teams playing two games to determine their seed positions for the single elimination tournament in the afternoon.  Team Downey Fresh was seeded first, Boutin & Briscoe second, and the Tanakaholics third.  Boutin & Briscoe defeated the three-time champion Tanakaholics in the semifinals, and then beat the Kings 57-54 in a thrilling finale.

This year's event hosted the 3rd Annual Faculty and Staff Knock Out Tournament.  Professor Peter Lee beat out Academic Success Program Director Chris Ide-Don (2nd place) and Professor Clay Tanaka (3rd place) to repeat as Knock Out champion.

ESLS would like to thank the following individuals for their assistance and participation: Professors John Hunt, Peter Lee, Clay Tanaka, Carter White, and Lisa Pruitt, as well as King Hall staff members Chris Ide-Don, and Gia Hellwig.  Additionally, ESLS would like to extend thanks to Morrison & Foerster for generously sponsoring the tournament's lunch.

The Dr. Ives Basketball Tournament is named for Eric Iverson '79, who, according to Law School legend, jumped over three defenders to toss in a spectacular scoop shot at the buzzer to win the first tournament's championship game.  The annual competition has become a King Hall tradition.
