Swearing-In Ceremony Fills Kalmanovitz Courtroom

Swearing In Ceremony, 2010

The first Swearing-In Ceremony held in the new Paul and Lydia Kalmanovitz Appellate Courtroom brought an outstanding turnout of new attorneys from the Class of 2010 to King Hall on December 3.  Together with family and friends, members of the class packed the courtroom to celebrate passing the July 2010 California State Bar Examination in a ceremony featuring Dean Kevin R. Johnson, Justice Kathleen Butz '81 of the California Courts of Appeal, Third District; Judge John A. Mendez of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, and King Hall Alumni Association President John Schick '72, a Professor at Humphreys College Laurence Drivon School of Law.

"We're proud of you all, and we're looking forward to a very bright and productive future for all of you," said Dean Johnson in his opening remarks.  "Congratulations to all of you on this wonderful achievement."

Dean Johnson, who earlier in the day had attended the swearing-in of UC Davis School of Law alumna Tani Cantil-Sakauye '84 as Chief Justice of California, reminded those present of the remarkable legacy of King Hall graduates who preceded them.  "You all truly walk in historic footsteps, and you are all part of a most memorable class," he said.

Justice Butz and Judge Mendez jointly administered the state oath, and Judge Mendez administered the federal oath.  Justice Butz encouraged the Class of 2010 to remember why they had chosen to pursue a legal education and to use their knowledge and skills to help others.  "Wanting to make a difference starts one client at a time," she said.  "There will be plenty of people who need and want your help. Your challenge will be to find the career satisfaction that comes from applying your intelligence, your common sense, and your legal knowledge and skills to do what you can to help others."

John Schick also made brief remarks, encouraging the new attorneys to get involved in the Alumni Association and to return to King Hall as volunteers to share their knowledge and experience with students.  A reception in King Hall's new east wing followed the ceremony.
