Dean Johnson Comments on Ninth Circuit for CNN

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented on the ideological orientation of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for a news report on CNN.  With appeals pending before the Ninth Circuit on controversial immigration and same-sex marriage laws, the CNN report examined the Court's liberal reputation.

Dean Johnson said that moderate and conservative appointments by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush have changed the Ninth Circuit.

"I do think that the Ninth Circuit gets somewhat of a bad rap as being ultra-liberal, when I think that it's much more moderate than popular opinion would have it," he said.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
