Professor Cooper to Return to Haiti, Documentary Online

Professor Holly Cooper will return to Haiti May 12-15 as part of a human rights delegation, providing legal aid to earthquake victims there.  She also traveled to Haiti in March, and documentary footage of that journey is now available online from New America Media.

The return visit will include a trip to the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti, which donated two prosthetic limbs for UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic clients.  Accompanying Cooper as part of the delegation of doctors and lawyers will be Mark Windsor '97.

Plans for the return visit drew coverage from the Davis Enterprise, where Professor Cooper explained the delegation's purpose.  "The people of Haiti seek dignity, food and water, medical treatment, and hope for their children," she said. "Their stories are of the most monumental suffering imaginable. Our delegation is seeking cases that might compel our government to nobly and compassionately open its borders to offer sanctuary to the Haitian people."

Filmmaker Josue Rojas, who produced the short videos on the delegation available from New America Media, is at work on a longer film that will debut in coming months.

Holly Cooper is a professor of law and serves as staff attorney at the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic. Her areas of specialty include immigration law and detained immigrants' rights.
