Immigration Clinic Wins Release for Lawful Permanent Resident
Grisel Ruiz, the UC Davis Immigration Clinic Sutro Fellow, won cancellation of a removal order and release from immigration detention for a lawful legal resident on March 8.
The client, who had been detained at Yuba County Jail, has resided in the United States for 40 years but was facing removal proceedings as a result of a drug conviction. Though she battled drug abuse as a single mother raising six children, and as she dealt with the deaths of her mother, brother, and son, the client quit drugs four years ago and has been a contributing member of society.
Ruiz joined the Immigration Law Clinic through the Sutro Fellowship of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. Her fellowship project focuses on increasing access to legal resources for immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and also involves work for the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation (CRLAF). She is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School where she received the Tony Patiño Fellowship.
