King Hall Welcomes First-Year Students

UC Davis Law welcomed 265 first-year law students to King Hall as part of the school's Intro Week. It was heartening to see the halls bustling with excited students again, with COVID-19 protocols in place to keep everyone safe.

On Sunday, Aug. 15, a first-generation students orientation was held, followed by a Class of 2024 Welcome BBQ that evening at the UC Davis Alumni Center. Throughout the week, students took Introduction to Law classes taught by Professors Katherine Florey and David Horton.

On Tuesday, King Hall faculty, students and staff participated in a community read event that featured the book My Time Will Come: A Memoir of Crime, Punishment, Hope, and Redemption by Ian Manuel. At age 14, Manuel was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a non-homicide crime. He survived 18 years in solitary confinement before his release in 2016. UC Davis Law Professor Irene Joe was part of the legal team at the Equal Justice Initiative that worked with Manuel to seek justice for him and future generations.

On Wednesday, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Stacy Boulware Eurie '95 administered the Oath of Professionalism to the incoming class to help them prepare for their legal education.

First-year students were not the only ones getting acquainted with King Hall during Intro Week. In the evenings mid-week, second-year students came to the law school for Tours and Tacos. This gave the returning students a chance to become familiar with the building after last year's remote instruction. In addition, a 2L Meet Up, including dinner and a trivia night, was scheduled for Friday evening.

This full week of activities was a team effort by Kristen Mercado, Joe Schneider, Kirsten Livingston, Montré Everett and Manuel Alvarez in the Admissions and Financial Aid Office; Emily Scivoletto and Alexis Elston in Student Affairs; and Chris Ide-Don with the Academic Success Program. Onell Berrios and Tessa Bryce provided event and facility support.
