Professor Chin Served As Reporter for Collateral Consequences Act Adopted by New Mexico

A collateral consequences of conviction bill was signed into law April 5 by New Mexico Gov. Lujan Grisham. Professor Gabriel “Jack” Chin served as Reporter for the Uniform Collateral Consequences of Conviction Act on which the New Mexico law is based.

The Uniform Collateral Consequences of Conviction Act is a project of the Uniform Law Commission. The act addresses the penalties and disqualifications that individuals face incidental to criminal sentencing. Vermont is the only other state to have enacted such as law.

A Massachusetts version of the act, presented by state Sen. Joseph Boncore, is moving through that state’s Legislature. The state House concurred with the bill March 29 and the Senate has referred it to the Judiciary Committee.

Gabriel "Jack" Chin is Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law and holder of the Edward L. Barrett Jr. Endowed Chair at UC Davis School of Law.  He is a prolific and much-cited criminal and immigration law scholar whose work has addressed many of the most pressing social issues of our time.
