Leaving Prison Before You Get Out
Alton McSween was released from SQ State Prison on April 4th, 2013 after having been granted relief under Proposition 36. At the time of his release, he had served 12 years of a life sentence for his 3rd Strike offense of petty theft. Mr. McSween graduated from the rehabilitation program Guiding Rage Into Power (GRIP) as a "change agent." He participated in many other groups while incarcerated, with the goal of learning how to be of service to society. Since his release he has been employed as a case manager for CA Re-Entry Institute, board member of Foundation for Restorative Justice, and adviser to Root & Rebound. He is currently in training and on track to be a Certified Addiction Specialist in May and is en route to become a Domestic Violence Counselor.
