California Trial Court Budget for 2020-21 Fiscal Year Highlights Ongoing Reductions
Posted Jul 31, 2020
The Judicial Council approved the allocation of trial court funds from the 2020-21 state budget at its July 24th business meeting. This includes allocations of $2.207 billion to the trial courts and $68.8 million for employee benefits. Distributions to the trial courts also include a workload formula to provide a pro rata distribution of half of the $50 million in one-time funding included in the budget to help courts deal with backlogs caused by COVID-19-related service reductions. The other $25 million is reserved for trial courts experiencing pandemic-related backlogs after the initial funding. The budget approval also includes an ongoing reduction to the $168.7 million allocated to trial courts, to be reduced based on workload as statewide funding levels are determined in the upcoming months.
